Coaching soccer is quite a challenging process. This rings even more true when trying to find highly effective and useful soccer drills for high school students.
In this article we are going to show you some of the soccer drills that we highly recommend you start adding to your training sessions. These range from warm-up exercises to
Warm Up Drills
With warm up drills, you can decide whether you want to do these with the ball or without.
With the ball
If choosing to do a warm up drills with a soccer ball, then we recommend you focus on what is known as touch drills. Touch drills are just as they sound.
What you do, is place the soccer ball in front of you and gently tap the top of the ball with the sole of your soccer cleat or boot, rotating between left and right foot. You can do this for around 1 to 2 minutes to begin and continue to increase the time span as you begin to improve.
This drills will help you not only warm up, but will also help you improve your overall ball control.
Without the Ball
Warm up soccer drills for high school can be as simple as running around an oval pitch a few minutes at a time. This can range anywhere from 10 to 20 minutes. Best way to work out what works for you is by establishing the overall fitness of your team.
If you see that most of your players are becoming quite tired, then starting at a more gentle pace may do just the trick.
Speed Drill
With speed drills it’s important to keep your endurance and stamina at a high level. Don’t exhaust yourself. One simple speed drill that you can perform in your high school soccer coaching consists of; getting your players to keep the ball about 40 feet away from the standing point, then sprinting to recover the ball and finishing up by jogging back with the ball back to the original standing point. Repeat this drill about 3 to 4 times for optimal results.
Additionally you can focus on specific conditioning soccer drills and improve your endurance for game play even more.
Agility Drill
One of my favorite soccer agility drills consists of placing 4 objects in a cross layout. You can use whatever you like for this, whether it be cones or just your soccer boots. As long as you can a cross grid, then that will do the trick.
Once you have this setup, you will stand on 1 foot and hop with the other one between your cones, left and right, then switch after one minute and dot he same.
After you have done left and right, you will now do the same going back and front – repeat the process like you did earlier, getting to a total of 4 minutes.
The next step, is to hop between your object diagonally. Once again, do this for 2 minutes, 1 minute on each leg.
Lastly, hop around all 4 objects in a clockwise direction. After one minute, change legs and do the same counter clockwise.
Having done all the above you have now completed your agility drill.
Learning these soccer drills for your high school programs is not difficult at all. Take the time to show your players how to get familiar with them. Once they do, it is as simple as rinse and repeat. By implementing these drills into your training your squad will improve their overall game performance and have a great time while doing so.
